Kayak lessons: Melbourne and Victoria
You may just have bought a kayak, want to know if kayaking is the “thing for you” or just want to fine tune and develop your existing technique and seamanship. There are four affordable courses designed to meet you needs. Completing one or more of the following courses will make you a safer and more confident sea kayaker this summer.

Class sizes range from two to six students with an instructor/student ratio ranging from 1:4 to 1:2 depending on the course. These low student to instructor ratios ensure students receive individual attention and explanation of skills. Classes are designed to be fun and loaded with information.

  • Introduction to Sea Kayaking
    Time: 10:00am to 4:00pm
    Location: 300m west of Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, Pier Rd, St Kilda, Melway Ref 57 J9
    Description: For first time paddlers and those who have never had any formal instruction. The aim of this class is to give you a good foundation in the knowledge and skills essential for safe and enjoyable paddling. You will learn about: kayak equipment and what to wear, manoeuvring your kayak (forward, reverse, side ways, turning and steering) low support, a short afternoons paddle, "wet-exits" and recovery from a capsize. All participants receive a free Sea Kayak Australia t-shirt.

    Price: $150 per person ($110 own equipment)

  • Intermediate Skills
    Time: 10:00am to 4:00pm
    Location: Barwon Heads or Inverloch
    Description: For people who consider that they have good kayak confidence and elementary support strokes. The aim of this class is togive you the skills and knowledge necessaryto handle a sea kayak in breaking waves andundertake a day trip in open water. You will learn about surfing in your kayak and support strokes in a surf zone. All participants receive a free Sea Kayak Australia t-shirt.
    Length of course: 1 day
    Minimum numbers: 3
    Price: $180 per person, $140 p.p. own equipment (does not include accommodation or food)

  • Support Strokes & Eskimo Roll
    Time: 11:00am to 1:00pm and 2:00pm to 4:00pm (December to March) or 6:00pm to 8:00 pm
    (2 sessions over 2 days) (April to November)
    Location: St Kilda and in the cooler months an indoor pool (Hawthorn)
    Description: For people who have good boat confidence and elementary support strokes. The aim of this class is to give you the skills and knowledge necessary to execute a high support stroke and an Eskimo Roll. All participants receive a free Sea Kayak Australia t-shirt.
    Length of course: 2 sessions (2 hours each) on 2 separate days in winter at an indoor pool or 2 sessions on the same day in summer on Port Phillip Bay.

    Price: $120 per person (+$50 for pool hire in winter)
