How to pack your kayak
  • LOCATION: Wilsons Promontory is located about 3 hours drive from Melbourne and is one of the most popular National Parks in Australia.
  • DESCRIPTION: Port Welshpool is the closest town to Corner Inlet. Recently a section of Corner Inlet near Chinaman’s Beach was designated a Marine National Park because of its internationally significant coastal wetlands comprising mangroves and seagrass beds which are habitat for numerous varieties of fish and crustaceans. Corner Inlet is a spectacular area of granite rocks plunging down into azure clear water. The snorkelling is great and there are lots of tracks to explore in the hinterland while looking out to the sea and Toora mountain range.
This area has also recently been the focus of environmental management issues such as the effect of the Marine Park on the livelihood of local fishermen. The other hot issue has been the suitability of wind power turbines being placed behind farms located on the range behind Toora, highlighting the visual amenity versus “clean” energy debate.
The itinerary can be flexible with camping at Tin Mine cove for 1 to 3 nights and day trips to Bennison and Doughboy Islands and Biddie’s Cove.
