How to pack your kayak
  • LOCATION: The Glenelg River is situated in the southwest corner of Victoria about 5-6 hours drive from Melbourne. Meeting place: take a right off the Portland Nelson Road and travel along the Nelson Winnap Road, then turn left at Hedditch road and meet at Pines Dog Landing.
  • DESCRIPTION: This river winds 400 km to the sea through a huge variety of flora and fauna. In the area kayaked it has carved out caves to explore and remarkable limestone gorges up to 50m in height. The Glenelg estuary is the longest in Victoria and provides habitat for a variety of fish including mulloway, bream, mullet, salmon and trout. Kingfishers and herons fish in the shallows and land animals such as emus, eastern grey kangaroos, red necked wallabies, koalas and echidnas can be spotted on shore. This area is also significant for its flora and is the most eastern area for many Western Australian plants. Over seven hundred species, including fifty orchids may be sighted.
This trip is unique because of the specialist camp sites for kayakers and the ancient geological features of the limestone gorges form Lasletts camp site down to Nelson.
This trip is not technically a sea kayaking expedition (as there is no sea!), however the double Pittarak sea kayaks are fast and stable and ensure a lot more distance is covered within a week.
