  • LOCATION: The Gippsland Lakes are situated just past Sale, approximately 3-4 hours drive east of Melbourne. To find Holland’s Landing take a right after Stratford and head towards a place called Bengworden, then turn right after travelling 27 km from the original turn off.
  • DESCRIPTION: “Gippy” Lakes or the “Lakes”, as they are affectionately known by locals, is Australia’s largest natural enclosed waterway being 103 km long. Gippsland Lakes comprises of three main lakes: Wellington, Victoria and King. The townships of Paynesville, Metung, Lakes Entrance and Loch Sport are dotted along this inland water system. Seven fresh water rivers (Latrobe, Thompson, Perry, Avon, Tambo, Mitchell, Nicholson) flow into the Lakes to sustain life and create amazing geological features such as the Mitchell River silt jetties. The Lakes are primarily known for their bird life with more than 190 species of birds including the white bellied sea eagle and little tern. Camp sites are plentiful along Gippsland Lakes, and access to Ninety Mile Beach Marine National Park is possible at the Bunga Arm and Reedy Bay camp sites.
By the end of this trip, students will have kayaked the complete length of Lake Victoria (80 km) providing a real sense of achievement!
SKA has found Gippsland Lakes to be a safe and ideal journey based expedition area for school groups, for the following reasons:
    • — Little tidal effect (except at Lakes Entrance)
    • — The wind usually blows from the west and thus groups get “blown up” the Lakes towards Lakes Entrance
    • — Numerous camp sites
    • — Numerous pullout or exit points
    • — Huge bird population
    • — Land is no more than 4 kilometres away at any one point
