How to pack your kayak
  • LOCATION: Westernport Bay is located approximately 1to 2 hours drive from Melbourne. Meeting place is at Phillip Island Information Centre, on the south side of the main road in Newhaven Melway reference 532 H8.
  • DESCRIPTION: Westernport Bay encompasses Phillip Island and French Island, two contrasting areas of settlement and environmental features. Phillip Island is one of Victoria’s playgrounds in summer and can be heavily populated, but off peak it is very peaceful. The coast line is rugged and spectacular. French Island is one of the more remote areas in Victoria with only 80 people living on an island and is about twice the size of Phillip Island.
         Both areas are rich in natural habitat with the north side of French Island and Churchill Island (near Rhyll on Phillip Island) being recently designated as a Marine National Park. These areas are known for their mangroves, seagrass beds and saltmarsh habitats for fish such as whiting and for lamp shells (prehistoric life forms).
         French Island has one of Victoria’s largest koala colonies and is also home to many animals and birds. As with many SKA trips, dolphins and seals may also be seen. Westernport is known for its tidal movements and thus tides become an integral part of expedition planning.
