How to pack your kayak
  • LOCATION: The Whitsunday Islands are located just north of Mackay in Queensland. The plane flight takes about 4 to 5 hours from Melbourne.
A bus will be arranged to collect the school group at Proserpine airport and drive to either the camping ground or the backpackers hostel in Airlie beach.
  • DESCRIPTION: The two islands that are mostly paddled by sea kayak are the Whitsunday and Hook. These islands are paradise! There are reefs to explore and snorkel, pure white sandy beaches to sunbake on and valleys where colourful butterflies fill the air. Majestic whales, mantarays, dolphins, the ancient dugong and of course thousands of species of colourful fish. Are you interested yet?
Because these two islands are 30 km from the mainland, a barge will ferry kayaks, food and people out to Whitsunday Island. This ensures time is not spent paddling out to the islands and provides safe transport across the Whitsunday Passage (where the weather can be unpredictable).
The temperature in the Whitsunday Group in the winter/spring is about 20 to 26 degrees Celsius, with the best months for sea kayaking being from June to November.
SKA staff will discuss the school’s expedition goals and priorities (e.g. to see whales, lots of paddling, lots of walking, lots of snorkelling, lots of sunbaking etc.) before finalising the trip design to ensure the best possible experience.
