Experience Melbourne from the water on a small-group sunset kayak tour along the Yarra River (Birrarung). Paddle through the heart of Melbourne as the city transitions from daylight to twilight, taking in iconic bridges, historic waterfront precincts, gardens, wharves and the Melbourne skyline.

This 2.5-hour Melbourne kayak tour combines outdoor adventure, local history, nature and Melbourne's famous golden hour. Our stable, easy-to-paddle double kayaks make this a relaxed and social way to experience the city, whether you're a visitor, local, couple, family, group of friends or travelling on your own.

As the sun sets, Melbourne's buildings and waterfront take on a completely different character. Hear the sounds of the city, watch the changing light and enjoy the atmosphere of the Yarra River before paddling back through Melbourne at twilight.

Departure Time: Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to start time.

May to August: 3:45pm for a 4:00pm start
September: 4:45pm for a 5:00pm start
October: 5:45pm for a 6:00pm start
November to February: 6:45pm for a 7:00pm start
March: 5:45pm for a 6:00pm start
April: 4:45pm for a 5:00pm start

Return Time: Approximately 2.5 hours after the start time above.

What to wear & bring: Be sun smart but also prepare in case of rain / cool weather. Please wear / bring:

Itinerary

Meet at Boathouse Drive

Meet your guide at Boathouse Drive, Melbourne, opposite Federation Square. Look for the yellow kayaks.

Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time for registration, safety information and getting ready for the tour.

Paddle into the heart of Melbourne

After a safety briefing, launch onto the Yarra River (Birrarung) and begin paddling towards the city.

Your guide will introduce you to the river, its history and its changing role in Melbourne. The Yarra is more than a waterway through the city—it connects Melbourne's natural environment, history, culture and people.

Explore Melbourne from the water

As we paddle through the city, we'll pass and view many of Melbourne's iconic waterfront landmarks and historic sites, including:

We'll also explore some of the less obvious stories of the river, including former wharves, working waterfront areas, historic waterways and the changing relationship between Melbourne and the Yarra.

Stop for a break

We'll make a short stop along the way to enjoy a drink and snack and have a chat with your fellow paddlers and guides.

Melbourne's golden hour

As the sun begins to set, the city changes. Reflections on the river, Melbourne's skyline and the waterfront create a spectacular golden-hour kayaking experience.

Depending on the season, weather and river conditions, we may also have the opportunity to see the famous Crown Gas Brigades fire display from the water.

The Gas Brigades operate subject to weather, safety requirements, maintenance and Victorian fire restrictions, so the display cannot be guaranteed.
